Mary Lou is a photo series that documents my grandmother’s intentional decision to die with dignity. Mary Lou, or Nana, made the choice in the spring of 2024 that she was ready to let go. Over the course of the following week and a half, in the comfort of her studio apartment, she gradually limited her intake of food and water. As I sat beside her on the carpeted floor, holding her delicate hand, I asked if I could make a few final portraits of her in her room. She nodded.
